History
SsangYong
Motor Group in Korea began as the Korean SsangYong Business Group
in 1939 and is now a large conglomerate with interest in cement,
oil, paper, financial information and leisure services. In
1986, SsangYong bought the Ha Dong Hwan Motor Company which had
been making four wheel drive vehicles and trucks since
1954.
In
1991, SsangYong formed an alliance with Mercedes-Benz, licensing
light commercial and petrol engines and components. This
relationship still exists, with Mercedes engineers working with
SsangYong to develop and adapt various Mercedes-Benz engines and
components.
The
SsangYong Musso 4WD has been in production since 1993 and the
smaller Korando 4WD since 1997. In 1998, the luxury Chairman
sedan was released, and then in 2002 came the stylish Rexton 4WD.
Production of the Musso Sports dual cab 4WD or 2WD utility
began in the late 2003. The Stavic was released earlier this
year and is available in 2WD or 4WD and can seat up to 8
people.
SsangYong
is now a major builder of 4WD vehicles, it's annual production
equaling that of the much wider known Land Rover brand, mainly for
the domestic market.
What's In A Name
SsangYong
means "twin dragons". It refers to a legend in which two
dragons waited 1000 years to fly to dragon heaven. Finally, a
single cintamani, which was necessary for the journey, was
released. Each dragon encouraged the other to take it and
make the trip until both missed the opportunity.
The
king of heaven was so touched that he released a second cintamani
and thus the two dragons entered heaven together.
